Just another night here at our house: Saffy and Homer (im)patiently waiting to be told they can start their dinner, Smudge  wolfing down his meal….

and just out of sight,

Socs hopes I won’t notice that he’s stalking Smudge’s leftovers. Not pictured: Plato, The Anti-Social One.

Meal Plan Week of 2/6

Well it had to happen sooner or later…we totally went off the rails with our meal plan last week. We had some hard things to deal with last week and there was just no way we were cooking the way we had planned. Turns out take out is just the way to go sometimes.

However, we’re trying to get back on track – so here’s what we’ve got planned for the week:

Monday – Shrimp Scampi and Salad
Tuesday – Italian Beef Sandwiches and Sweet Pototato Fries
Wednesday – Pork Tenderloin, Crash Hot Potatoes (seriously, you guys HAVE to try these. SO SO SO good), Salad
Thursday – Tofu Stir fry, Rice, Salad (Ginger Dressing – yum! I’ll see if I can post this recipe this week, it’s awesome)
Friday – Garlic Hot Wings and French Fries

This week I had to work a little harder to make all the deals work..but it was definitely worth it! All told I saved $265.15 or 91% – one of my best totals in quite a while! We’re stocked up on dog treats for about 9 months and as I write this my husband is grilling me up some steak and shrimp…gotta love overage! :)

This list actually represents 3 different trips to three different stores (I had to spread out my Beggin Strips purchases so that I didn’t clean anyone out!), so I was able to use three $5/$25 coupons AND some Register Rewards to bring those totals down.

Meal Plan Week of 1/24

Posted in category Meal Plan

It’s that time again! Last week we stuck to our plan 100% and everything was DE-licious. Since we’re trying to keep things interesting, we’re checking out  few new recipes this week! Here’s the plan:

Mon – Emeril’s Turkey Tetrazzini with the last of our turkey leftovers from last week
Tues – I really can’t wait to try this recipe for Sweet & Sour Pork with broccoli and snow peas
Wed – Grilled Salmon with couscous and brussell sprouts
Thur – Chicken tacos…yum!
Fri – Chicken Sausage Pasta (we’re going to try to re-create the dish we made a few weeks ago because we can’t stop talking about it!)

This week I’m going to try to take some pictures & report back on the recipes if I have a few extra minutes, too…we’ll see how that goes! :)

But *I* wanted the turkey leftovers!!! **sigh**

Man, I had a lot of shopping to post tonight! Here’s today’s quick trip to CVS:

There is a TON of makeup on clearance at CVS right now – you might want to grab your coupons before you go there next! Here’s some of what I spotted at my store:

Sally Hansen Lip, Orig. $10.99, 75% off – $2.75
-$1/1 Sally Hansen Lip Product (exp 2/2/2011)

Hmmmmm….I may need to grab MY coupons and run back up to the store – a girl can never have enough free eye shadow :)

Publix Run 1/22

Posted in category Publix

As promised: another quick Publix run. My store didn’t have the Yellow Advantage flyers out yet so I skipped the few deals that depended on those coupons – I’m sure I’ll pick them up over the next weeks – and just grabbed the few things that I had on my list. Mid-trip Matt called to remind me that I needed to pick up beer to take to the party we went to last night, so I spent $14 more than I planned, but thanks to all those great (and basically FREE) Walgreens Register Rewards I was still able to do ok. Sadly, they wouldn’t take the $5/$25 and the $10 RR, but oh well…you win some and you lose some :) . Here’s what I got:

# Item Price Qs Total
1 Sam Adams 12 pk $13.99 $13.99
3 LaCroix Seltzer $10.50 $3.75 $6.75
4 Sundown vitamins $11.96 $16.00 ($4.04)
2 Tabasco sauce $5.00 $1.50 $3.50
1 Red Hot sauce $1.50 $0.50 $1.00
1 Mezzetta Pepperocinis $1.50 $0.50 $1.00
4 Hormel Chili $8.00 $3.50 $4.50
1 Publix Butter $3.39 $3.39
1 Carrots $0.89 $0.89
Competitor Coupon $10.00 ($10.00)
Tax $1.54
Total OOP $22.52

I saved $42.64 or 65%…not too shabby!

Walgreens Run 1/22

Sunday, January 23, 2011 18:43
Posted in category Walgreens

I finally got the Sinex coupons I ordered in the mail…and man was I excited to find that there were still stores in town that had Sinex in stock for that killer Wags deal ($10 RR wyb $20 Sinex, priced at $5 each).

# Item Price Qs Total RR Rcvd
2 Prilosec 42 ct $49.98 $6.00 $43.98 $5.00
16 Vicks Sinex $80.00 $64.00 $16.00 $40.00
4 Listerine Zero $7.96 $8.00 ($0.04) $4.00
4 Thermacare 1 ct $10.00 $4.00 $6.00 $10.00
3 Bubble Wrap (clearance) $1.50 $1.50
RRs Used/Remaining $25.00 ($25.00) $34.00
Tax $1.50
Total OOP $43.94

According to my receipts, I saved $158.17 or 78% this week!

My out of pocket is pretty high this week, but won’t be in the long run: I’ve already submitted for the $25 Prilosec rebate which effectively means I spent $18.94 out of pocket for $34 worth of Register Rewards that I’ll use over the next few weeks to do even more deals (or to reduce my grocery totals since my Publix accepts RRs).

The expiration on the Sinex (which is the new name for NyQuil/DayQuil, by the way) is late in 2013, so I’ll likely hold onto it through next year’s cold season and then donate  if we’re still overstocked.

I was in Wags this afternoon pricing Maalox for the even-better moneymaker this week, and I saw that the Sinex tag was still up – according to the tag, the RR deal runs through the end of the week so I might just have to order a few more coupons :) .

Publix Run 1/21

Posted in category Publix

I had a few more $5/$25 coupons that were expiring and the Kleenex coupons I ordered off of eBay came in, so last night it was time for a quick and CHEAP Publix run! Here’s what I got:

# Item Price Qs Total
16 Kleenex (rain check from last wk) $20.00 $31.00 ($11.00)
1 Blue Moon 12 pk $13.99 $13.99
4 Halls Cough Drops $3.38 $5.98 ($2.60)
2 Oranges $0.96 $3.00 ($2.04)
1 Green Onions $1.19 $1.19
4 Kraft Homestyle Mac $5.18 $6.00 ($0.82)
1 Sno Peas $1.41 $1.41
1 Portabella Mushrooms $1.69 $1.69
4 Hunt’s tomatoes $2.78 $1.75 $1.03
4 Whole Fruit Sorbet $5.78 $2.00 $3.78
2 YoPlait YoPlus yogurt $2.00 $2.00 $0.00
1 Publix 1/2 loaf bread $1.80 $1.80
1 lb. BH Pesto Ham $9.16 $9.16
1 18 ct publix eggs $2.85 $2.85
2 Viva Paper Towels $13.98 $4.00 $9.98
$5/$25 $10.00 ($10.00)
Tax $3.30
Total OOP $23.72

This week I saved $105.29 for a savings of nearly 82%. I’ll also be sending in for the $10 Publix Giftcard offer from the “Start Your Year out With Big Savings” booklet…taking my total out of pocket down to $13.72 or a savings of 88%!

We are obviously stocked up on Kleenex for quite a while, which is great because we were down to our last box from the last time they were on sale. I was also able to get some of the higher-priced items that we needed (we’ve been out of paper towels for over 3 weeks) with all that fantastic overage.

I have another $5/$25 and since today is the last day to use them…I will probably be heading out again this afternoon to grab the deals from the Yellow Advantage Buy Flyer. I’ve been doing a bunch of little trips lately and while it gets a little time consuming, the savings is definitely worth it!

Menu Plan Week of 1/15

Saturday, January 15, 2011 14:26
Posted in category Cooking

I am thrilled to report that Matt and I have been doing really well on our menu-planning resolution. We stuck to last week’s plan with only a few deviations. We ended up having :

Sun – Spaghetti and meat sauce, garlic bread, salad
Mon – Fish tacos (I managed to break the lid to our tortilla warmer after dinner on Monday. Anyone know where I can find one on the cheap?)
Tues – Pork Chops, Cornbread Stuffing, sauteed greens
Wed – Four Cheese Stuffed Shells with salad
Thur – Shrimp Fra Diavolo  (Matt made the fra diavolo sauce out of leftover marinara sauce and it was FABULOUS!) & homemade garlic bread
Fri – Blackened Salmon Ceasar Salad & homemade garlic bread

This week was definitely pasta-heavy but every night’s dinner still felt really fresh and interesting..and we’re both excited about dinner because there’s none of our usual casting about trying to figure out what to make. We don’t bicker about what we want because we’ve already agreed ahead of time, and we don’t cop out and just call for pizza. Really, you have no idea: for us to go 6 nights without takeout – for the second week in a row! – is pretty amazing.

This week’s plan:

Sun – Chicken Parm, salad (we’ll make extra cutlets for lunches this week)
Mon –  Vegetable Quiche, salad
Tue – Pork Tenderloin, asparagus, cousous
Wed – Burgers & Baked Sweet Potato fries
Thurs – Turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans (this means turkey soup! WOOHOO! :)

Publix Run 1/13

Saturday, January 15, 2011 9:18
Posted in category Publix

If you follow I Heart Publix you know that I did my shopping early this week….but what you don’t know is that in trying to be as awesome as Happy (not possible!!), I totally threw off my shopping game! I was busy examining signs and taking pictures so I managed to grab the wrong coffeemate (the one that WASN”T BOGO – I ended up paying $5 for two bottles instead of 29¢!) AND the wrong wine (I meant to grab a cheaper bottle as we only needed it for cooking), and I didn’t even look at the Cesar treats before I threw one in my bag….they’re $3.79 now instead of $3. I definitely wasn’t paying enough attention to my shopping! Then, to top it all off, as I was working on putting everything away when I got home, the dog knocked a bag off the counter. Of course it was the bag with the eggs in it, and they ALL cracked. Now instead of a dozen eggs in my fridge I have a rubbermaid container of ready-to-go scrambled eggs :) . So please, before anything else, let’s take a moment to appreciate Happy and all of her weekly awesomeness! :)

Here’s what I got this week:

# Item Price Qs Total
4 Jell-o pudding $8.00 $4.40 $3.60
2 Coffee Mate Creamer 32 oz $7.00 $2.00 $5.00
4 Lysol NeutraFresh $7.18 $4.00 $3.18
1 Morton Kosher Salt $2.39 $2.39
2 Glad Kitchen Bags` $10.98 $6.00 $4.98
1 Cesar Treat $3.79 $2.00 $1.79
1 Smoking Loon Chardonnay $7.59 $1.00 $6.59
1 Boar’s Head Capicola $4.38 $4.38
1 Land O Lakes Muenster Cheese $4.94 $1.00 $3.94
1 Boar’s Head Garlic Bologna $4.10 $4.10
4 Stayfree Pads $13.64 $12.82 $0.82
2 EPT $15.99 $10.00 $5.99
4 Sundown Vitamin D $11.96 $16.00 ($4.04)
3 Whiskas Trays $1.50 $0.50 $1.00
2 Power Of Fruit Bars $3.39 $2.00 $1.39
4 Jimmy Dean Dlights $11.74 $10.00 $1.74
1 Celery $1.69 $1.69
1 Baby Carrots $1.25 $1.25
1 Asparagus $2.58 $2.58
1 Romaine $1.89 $1.89
2 Crusty Baguettes $2.00 $2.00
1 Eggland’s Best $1.88 $0.55 $1.33
3 Lemons $1.99 $1.99
3 Limes $1.99 $1.99
1 Libby’s Pumpkin Pie filling $1.50 $1.50
4 Starbucks coffee (rain check) $27.96 $5.50 $22.46
$5/$25 $15.00 ($15.00)
Tax $3.88
Total OOP $74.41

By the time I realized that the coffeemate was a $5 mistake, Matt had already opened it, so I can’t take it back…oh well. I was happy to be able to use my last Starbucks rain check in conjunction with that $5/$25…now we’re stocked up for the next 8 weeks or so. If it goes $6.99 again before the end of January, I may have to grab some more – I have a few more $1/1 blinkies.

This week I spent $74.41 for $206.91 worth of groceries, so about 64% savings. Definitely not my best, but certainly not my worst! :)

CVS Run 1/9

Is it just me, or have the drugstores actually gotten FUN again???

The moneymakers this week just happened to be items that I had TONS of coupons for, so I planned for a nice leisurely trip Sunday morning. I got a great, patient cashier and managed to hit the store at a time when there weren’t many customers…and whenever someone came in, I’d just finish that particular transaction and let them go ahead (I really hate to make people wait through my multiple transactions at the drugstores). Here’s what I got:

# Item Price Qs Total
3 Airwick Freshmatic $15.00 $12.00 $3.00
9 Finish Tabs $27.00 $20.25 $6.75
Christmas gift bags/clearance $1.24 $1.24
1 Snickers $0.89 $0.89
1 Reese’s Minis $1.59 $1.59
4 Frappuccino 4 pk $19.96 $4.00 $15.96
Christmas decorations/clearance $6.50 $6.50
4 Gainesville Sun $6.00 $6.00
ECBs Used $29.48 ($29.48)
Tax $2.80
Total OOP $15.25

Thanks to the great sales last week, I started my trip with $7 ECBs, and rolled them over 6 transactions. I’m left with $10 ECB for next week and I saved $105.35 or 87%!

Publix Run 1/8

Saturday, January 8, 2011 17:21
Posted in category Publix

I hope you all are enjoying your weekend – I know I am! I lounged in bed until an unheard-of NINE FIFTEEN today, and it was fabulous. (I was on Dog Duty this morning, but I’ve gotten pretty good at sleepwalking through that 5-minute chore, so I don’t even count it as ‘getting up’ anymore :) ). Then I puttered around the house a bit, cut and organized the printable coupons I had laying around, and worked on my Publix list for the morning.

Matt is teaching this semester so he’s on campus pretty much every day – which means we have to put a little more thought into portable lunches than we do during other times during the year – and I knew I needed to get some lunch meat and bread for him, and some general groceries for our dinners this week. We’re also trying to plan dinners more than we had been before the holidays, which has been working out really well so far…we’re LOVING the variety. (When we get stuck in that 4 pm “what’s for dinner?” rut it seems that we have grilled meat and potatoes EVERY night. I’m definitely a meat and potatoes girl, but even I have my limits!)

This past week we had:

  • a fantastic sauteed salmon with a summer-squash-and-fire-roasted-tomato ragout and parmesan cousous
  • pork enchiladas with adobo chipotle rice
  • stuffed cabbage with a great (and HUGE) salad
  • Chicken Sausage pasta (summer squash, onion, garlic, artichoke pesto, and feta cheese….I cannot even tell you how delicious this was)
  • Pork chops, adobo rice and sauteed greens

Coming up this week we’re planning:

  • Fish tacos with zucchini slaw
  • Four Cheese Stuffed Shells with salad
  • Pork chops, broccoli, and cornbread stuffing
  • Rosemary Chicken stew with rice or egg noodles
  • Either shrimp scampi or spaghetti & meatballs with salad

Not surprisingly, I’ve found that it’s a lot easier to get dinner prep started earlier when we have a clear plan of what we’re making (and I can be sure to have all the necessary ingredients on hand). Plus, my OCD loves the planning and list-making :) Note to self: I’ve got to get back on taking dinner pictures so I can post recipes!!

Here’s what I grabbed at Publix this week:

# Item Price Qs Total
1 Kashi Pizza $5.00 $4.00 $1.00
2 Jala Ice Cream Bar $3.99 $2.00 $1.99

Hello there, internets! Long time, no see. I know I’ve been missing from this blog for about four weeks, and I’m really sorry about that. Here’s a basic breakdown of what I’ve been doing: working, making travel plans, and quilting. Seriously, that’s it. On the day after Thanksgiving, I decided that I would make quilts for my mom, sisters in law, and my niece for Christmas. Now, I had done a little bit of work here and there on the quilts for my sisters in law, but really, I was pretty much starting from scratch. (Just for the record, you should never try to make four full quilts in three weeks, unless you plan to forgo things like sleeping, showering, and interacting with the rest of the human race.)

Since I do have a full-time job and my husband really appreciates it when I shower regularly, I didn’t quite make my self-imposed Christmas deadline – but I got the one for my mom completely finished and was able to wrap quilt tops for each of them to open on Christmas, at least! Here’s what I made:

This one was for my sister in law Sarah. The details – Pattern: Birthday Quilt from Pam & Nicky Linott’s Jelly Roll Inspirations (it looks complicated, but it’s actually pretty simple once you get the hang of the blocks). Fabric: Blush by Basic Grey for Moda Size: 70″ square.

This one is my sister in law Lisa’s. I don’t have a more recent picture of this one – I added a cream border after I took this picture. The details – Pattern: Market Square by Sweet Jane’s Quilting & Design (I modified it a bit but the blocks are the same). Fabric: Laurel by Sentimental Studios for Moda. Size: 56″ x 68″.

As you might have guessed, this one was for my niece Allison. I don’t have this one basted yet because I’m planning to add a few more applique details to the top. (If you’re wondering, I made my own pattern for her name applique – I just typed her name in a word doc, found a font I liked, played with the letter size until it fit the space I had for it, then printed, traced backwards on fusible web, ironed to fabric, and cut it out VERY carefully with my sharpest pair of scissors.) I’ll also add a rod pocket to the backing so that it can be hung. The details – Pattern: Modified from Piece N Quilt’s 9 Birdie Baby Quilt (I just love Natalia’s designs, and some of you might recognize this block pattern because I’ve used it before). Fabric: Make Life by Sweetwater for Moda. Size: 44″ square.

Finally, this quilt is the one I finished for my mom (though this is only a picture of the top; I’ve asked her to take pictures of the finished quilt since I forgot to do so!). Mom always does so much to make our Christmases together special, and who better to have her own quilt just for Christmas time?? The details – Pattern: is one that Basic Grey put out for their Figgy Pudding line last year. I was able to find it as a free download on the Fat Quarter Shop a few months ago (but I think they’ve taken it down now?). Fabric: Fruitcake by Basic Grey for Moda. Size: 66″ x 72″.

So, yeah, um – now can you see why I barely had time to breathe, let alone update? Still, sorry to leave you all in the lurch so long! I’ll try to get myself back on an updating schedule in the coming weeks :) . Now it’s your turn – how were your holidays? Please link to your projects or just tell me how you managed to survive in the comments!!
